How To Survive the Workday in a Healthy Way

The majority of Americans now have sedentary jobs.  I believe this is one of the biggest contributors to the rise in obesity.  This infographic from Daily Infographic details just what happens to your body when sitting. Spoiler: it isn’t pretty.

If your job involves using a computer, it is so easy to go hours without having to get up.  Here are my tips for getting through the workday in a healthy way.

1. Force yourself to get up as much as possible.  Go talk to coworkers instead of sending an email.  Go to the restroom that is farthest away.  Take a 5 minute walk down the hall.  Anything that gets you up out of your chair will work.  I try to watch the clock and if 30 minutes have gone by, I make myself get up and at least do a quick stretch which brings me to my next tip.

Other ways to move more: take the stairs and park in the spot farthest from the door.

2. Stretch!  Sitting at a computer can wreak havoc on your neck, back, and shoulders.  Take some time to do some desk stretches.  I often search for a short YouTube video to follow and sometimes my co workers will join in.   We also store a yoga mat in our office so I sometimes will do some yoga moves or a couple of planks.

I also will do a plank while I am waiting for food to heat up in the microwave.  Now I understand if you have a public breakroom that might be a little awkward but the point is to try to squeeze in some activity whenever you can.

3. Sit on an exercise ball.  I have been trying to do this more and more.  I find that I move a lot more when I use it.  I also will use it to stretch by leaning back and stretching out my chest and abs.

4. Bring a water bottle.  Try to set a goal of refilling it a couple of times a day.  I usually have my 32 oz bottle and try to fill it up at least twice so I know I am staying hydrated.

5. Pack healthy snacks. I never ever go to work without food packed.  I always pack a lunch and a few snacks.  It is much easier to give in to office treats or the vending machine if you don’t have your own food packed.  I don’t tend to store food at work since I find I eat it when I’m not really hungry.  I like to pack just enough to get me through one day.

I also find that at work, I’ll reach for snacks when I am hitting that afternoon slump or if I am just flat out bored.  If I pack healthy snacks, at least I know I’m eating something nutritious rather than giving in to the basket of Reese’s Cups that are sitting in our break room right now (I’m not going to give in!).

Have a happy and healthy day!

Triathlon Packing List and Prep

Last Saturday, Derek and I participated in the Three Rivers Triathlon.  This race is actually the first triathlon I ever did back in 2010.   I was pretty happy to see that I improved my time by 8 minutes! (I think a lot of that had to do with using a nicer bike.)  I am not competitive by any means but I enjoy completing races just for the feeling of accomplishment.  Plus having a race on the calendar keeps me motivated to keep running, swimming, and biking.

I think some triathletes can be a little intimidating with super fancy bikes and aerodynamic helmets but there are always a variety of ages, sizes, and abilities.  The majority of the participants in this triathlon were older than us.  I usually do pretty well in the swim (I was a swimmer in high school) and then am passed a lot on the bike and run.  Everyone’s age was marked on their calf so I always check out the age of whoever is passing me.  I hope to be passing people in their 30s when I’m in my 50s and 60s!

I think one of the hardest parts of doing a triathlon is the prep.  So much stuff!!!   I always consult a list and run through it a couple of times.   It helps to separate it by each leg – swim, bike, and run.  I think I managed to remember everything this time.

Triathlon Packing List:

Pre Race

1. Water
2. Salty snacks (pretzels or nuts)

Post Race

1. Face wipes
2. Change of clothes
3. More snacks

Good luck to all those triathletes out there!

Easy Roasted Cherry Tomatoes

The cherry tomatoes have arrived! I wanted to use a bunch before they went bad and thought how delicious they would be roasted. Roasting vegetables is one my go to methods when I don’t want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

DSCN0474

To roast the tomatoes I spread them on a cooking sheet and drizzled with olive oil and salt. No cutting or prepping needed. I set the oven a little low at 325 degrees so they would cook slowly.  I let them roast for about 50 minutes and I shook the pan one time at about the 20 minute mark.

DSCN0477

Roasting the tomatoes intensifies their sweetness and the skins become a little carmelized (yum!).   The shriveled look is a good thing!  That means they are done.

I think we could have eaten these by themselves and been happy but I added them to a linguine pasta and mixed in a couple of spoonfuls of homemade pesto.   Such an easy and simple dinner!!

My Favorite Podcasts and Music Apps

I find that when have an exciting line up of podcasts on my phone it is much easier to get out for a run.  I have found that I do run a little slower when listening to podcasts instead of music but that’s ok by me.  If I feel like running faster, I’ll choose one of my favorite music apps.

I also listen to podcasts when doing housework which makes it a tad more enjoyable.

Podcasts

-I love adding short NPR podcasts to my playlist from the NPR app.  They are short and always are interesting. I usually add the most from the Health section.  I also like Fresh Air, Splendid Table, and This American Life for longer runs.

-I also listen to longer podcasts such as (please note that the descriptions came from the podcast websites themselves):

-Joy the Baker - The Joy the Baker Podcast is a weekly, candid look behind the scenes of Joy’s popular blog. Joy is joined by Tracy Benjamin, better known as Shutterbean. Together, they talk about recipes, photography, blog life, being a mom, not being a mom, married life, dating life, and… candy. It’s silly. It’s funny, and they want you to be there.

Death, Sex, and Money  –   A podcast about the big questions and hard choices that are often left out of polite conversation. Host Anna Sale talks to celebrities and regular people about relationships, money, family, work and making it all count while we’re here.

These are good for longer runs, driving, or folding laundry.  These can be downloaded from the iTunes Podcast app.

Music Apps
-Songza! Songza is an amazing free music app. You choose the type of mood you’re in and then the genre of music you feel like. It never lets me down. I’ve favorited a bunch of different stations.  It usually only has one commercial when you first open the app.

-Good ole’ Pandora.  I think most people are familiar with Pandora.  My favorite feature is the ability to shuffle through all your different stations which keeps it interesting.  The ads can be a little annoying when running but they are really short.

For running, my favorite ear buds are these .  They never fall out!

How Does Our Garden Grow

DSCN0281

This is the 3rd summer in our current home. Each year we have added a few more additions to our garden. This year the zucchini and cucumbers were amazing! I planted just one cucumber and two zucchini plants late spring and they have been producing like crazy since July.  Yesterday I ate zucchini at every meal – zucchini bread for breakfast, zucchini soup for lunch, and zucchini fritters for dinner (See below).  I will not let myself get sick of it since I know I’ll miss it this winter.

DSCN0286

Our tomatoes are heavy with fruits but some of the leaves have turned brown and shriveling – what causes this?? It happened last year too. It doesn’t seem to affect the tomatoes but it isn’t very pretty to look at. We added fertilizer and also got a soaker hose to see if that helps remedy the problem.

DSCN0272

We also have quite a few herbs. We have basil, rosemary, thyme, mint (regular and chocolate!), chives, lemon balm, lemongrass, summer savory, cilantro, and lavender. Fresh basil pesto has become one of my daily cravings.

20140801-DSCN0198

I also tried beets and carrots for the first time.  The beets are doing really well, the carrots not so much.  I think the soil is a little too hard for the carrots to grow through since they are just producing sad looking stubs (See below).

Growing a garden has got to be one of my favorite summer time activities!

Beauty addiction

I have loved beauty products from a very young age. I remember my Grandma and Aunt would give me old Clinique and Estee Lauder makeup samples when I was little.  Back then I loved playing and buying makeup but it was usually of the Bonne Bell variety. (Lipsmackers were my favorite!)  Fast forward 20 years and I still love it. There is something so beautiful about eye shadow pallets, peachy pink blushes, and bright red lipsticks.  The colors, the packaging, and the effects of make up are just so darn enjoyable!

I recently had a Sephora coupon (which are rare!) burning a hole in my pocket so I had to place a small order.  I’m on the search for the perfect concealer.  I had heard good things about the bareMinerals variety which also comes with some sort of blemish healing treatment.  Conceal and heal? Sounded good to me!

DSCN0263

I didn’t realize that it came with a little carrying case – how cute!  Luckily I haven’t really had to use this yet (thank you skin!) but I tried the concealer and the color match seemed pretty good.

I don’t wear a lot of lipstick but I want to try to incorporate it a little more often into my routine.   I’m always nervous that it is smudged, I have lipstick on my teeth, or it’s faded – well enough excuses.  I’m going to just start wearing some everyday and see how it goes.  I pretty much only own drugstore varieties so I thought it was high time for a little lipstick splurge.  This set looked like a perfect place to start!

DSCN0266

Of course, as soon I opened the package I went and tried on every single color.  There were 6 different products in varying shades.

-Right off the bat I loved the Marc Jacobs Mini Lust for Lacquer in Kissability.  It is a raspberry colored gloss.

-I also liked the Bite High Pigment Lip Pencil in Meritage.  It was more of a matte consistency but the pencil was really easy to apply.

-The Buxom Mini Full On Lip Cream in White Russian was a nice light pink gloss but whoa – it was super minty!!!

-Nars Deluxe Orgasm Lip Gloss is a similar shade to the super popular Nars Orgasm blush.  It has a really pretty gold shimmer that I think would look nice when I have a bit of a tan (from self-tanner of course!).

-Smashbox Be Legendary Gloss in Pout is a super pale gloss.  It looked a little light on me but hopefully I can make it work by layering it over a brighter color.

-Urban Decay Mini Naked Revolution Lipstick was more a nude color.  I’m not sure if it is the right nude for my skin tone but maybe I just need to use a lip pencil. I’m not sure??

I’m excited to see how this lipstick experiment goes!

Friday Flowers

I think most girls like flowers.  But I loooove them!  Flowers are a necessity for me.  In the summer our house doesn’t feel right if I don’t have a bouquet of fresh flowers displayed.   Fake flowers do not cut it.  Only fresh for this girl.

Here are a few pics of some beautiful blooms from our yard:

(Dahlias are becoming one of my favorites – look at this stunner!)

Have a happy Friday!

What I Ate Wednesday

8:00 am – Typical weekday kitchen sink smoothie.  Derek made the smoothie again and the ingredient list is intense: almond milk, 2 bananas, watermelon, kale, beet greens, carrot, beet, chia seeds, flax meal, hemp hearts, frozen blueberrries and strawberries, and cucumber.   These smoothies are taking on a life of their own but this one did keep me pretty satisfied for about 3 hours.

DSCN0235

11:00 am – Freshly made zucchini bread with peanut butter. I used this recipe that I found on Pinterest.  I made a couple modifications.  First, I cut the recipe in half so it only made one loaf, added about a 1/2 cup of extra zucchini (we have an abundance of zucchini right now), and I used two whole eggs instead of whites.  Egg  yolks are little nutritional goldmines so I rarely omit them.

DSCN0260

12:00 pm Homemade veggie soup.  I made this earlier in the week in the crockpot.  It has split peas, potatoes, (white and sweet) zucchini, carrots, onions, and peppers.

2:00 pm KIND bar  This variety is a little too good.

5:00 Granola with almond milk, blueberries, and peaches.  I was starving after work so I gobbled up this snack.

7:00pm Goat cheese and sundried tomato ravioli with pesto and cherry tomatoes along with a small salad.  Can’t beat fresh made pesto!

Trader Joe’s Haul

West Michigan is a wonderful place to live but we are lacking one thing – a Trader Joe’s! The closest one is about 2 hours away. So while we were on the east side of Michigan we had to stock up on some of our TJ favorites.

I love stores like Trader Joe’s but you still have to shop smart. I think that sometimes so-called ‘health food’ stores give off an appearance that everything they sell is healthy. But there is such a thing as “healthy” junk food. A cookie is still a cookie even though it is non-GMO and has no high fructose corn syrup. While it might be a better choice than a Oreo, it is still most likely high in sugar and calories.

With that said, I tried to avoid the lure of the healthy junk foods calling my name and found many great pantry staples.

FSCN0224

Some of the things we bought:

-Pizza and pasta sauce

-Oil (grape seed and olive)

-Ezekiel bread

-Body and face wash

-Specialty sauces (I think this something TJ excels at!)

-Canned tuna and salmon

Here are a couple of the things that are the favorite of my favorites:

DSCN0232 (2)

These quick cooking grains are so convenient for a quick dinner or to pack for lunch.

DSCN0234

-This cilantro salad dressing is so good!  I love to make my own dressings but you can’t beat the easy factor of premade dressings.  This one herby, garlicky, and delicious.  I love it on pretty much any type of salad.

-Balsamic glaze is one of my last meal foods.  I love the sweet sour flavor and it always makes something that was bland so good.  I drizzle it on salads, roasted veggies, meats, or really anything that needs a little pick me up.  Also one bottle lasts forever!

-I really like this light coconut milk to add to soups or curry dishes.

DSCN0233 (2)

Oh my!  These things are addictive.  I had never tried them before but now I’m hooked.  They are crunchy, sweet, and have the perfect amount of coconuttiness.   I’m thinking when I run out I will have to try to recreate these at home.

So hopefully this will last us until our next TJ trip!
