Nature Inspired Holiday Decorations

December 4, 2016 by Leave a Comment

I love decorating with nature inspired items for the holidays.  I especially enjoy making wreathes and garlands out of greens that I can find in my own backyard.  I made this garland last weekend.  It’s a little wild and might not be everyone’s style but I love the look of lots of different shades of green combined with a variety of textures.

This was actually the first garland that I’ve made but I think it turned out well.  The first step was to gather different types of greens.  I used a few different types of evergreen branches, green ivy, and a few succulents I found still growing in our yard.

I used a green plastic covered wire as my anchor.  I would gather a substantial bunch of greens and then anchor it to the wire using green floral wire.  The general pattern I used was a bunch of evergreen and then add a green of interest like the succulent or ivy.  I repeated that step until all the wire was covered.  For the end, I attached a bunch going the opposite direction to finish off the garland.

I try to remember to mist the garland everyday with water to keep it fresh and so far it isn’t dropped any needles and it looks pretty good.  If a piece does start to look dried out it is easy to remove and go forage for a replacement.  Other additions that would look nice are some clementines strewn about or some pine cones tucked in.

I used the same technique to make a wreath for our front door.  I also included boxwood and some dried herbs (lavender and thyme).  This was a grapevine wreath frame that I reuse every season.  For the fall, I had used bittersweet to make a wreath.  This winter I just unwound the floral wire and the old stuff fell right off.  I am even able to reuse the floral wire again and again.  I love that these decorations didn’t require any additional purchases and won’t result in much waste getting thrown out.  In this season of abundance, it is sometimes nice to keep things simple and natural.  Thank you Mother Earth with supplying me with these decorations!

I also was lucky enough to find a little living tree this year.  It is quite small but I plan on decorating it with all edible decorations like dried orange slices and popcorn & cranberry garland.  I haven’t completed it yet but will be sure to share it when I do.

Posion Ivy Remedy

June 13, 2016 by Leave a Comment

It never fails…I usually get poison ivy at least once a summer.  I have experimented with many home remedies to deal with the itching and I think I finally found something that works!   I read online somewhere that clay masks can help with poison ivy so I thought I would give it a try. I have had this Aztec Secret clay mask for awhile and I use it ever so often. It is a bit intense for my sensitive skin but turns out it works perfectly to heal poison ivy.  It’s recommended to mix with apple cider vinegar (what doesn’t ACV help?!?) but it can also be mixed with water.  I used this on a spot of poison ivy and I can say while applied it did not itch at all.  I applied it about twice a day for two days and by then the spot was pretty much healed.  Poison Ivy Remedy

When mixed the clay and vinegar start to bubble and it is recommended to mix with a wooden spoon to not interfere with the reaction.  Poison Ivy Remedy-2

Just in case, here’s a reminder of the three plants that can contain urushiol, the oil that causes the itchy rash.

Hopefully you won’t have to use this at all but just in case, you can get the clay mask on Amazon or I’ve seen it in health food stores too.

Spring Garden

Things are happening in our garden!  I planted some seeds about two weeks ago and also bought some starter plants.

So far I’ve planted lettuce, peas, beets, and red onions from seed.  Everything is up except the red onions.  I bought green lettuce, kale, acorn squash, eggplant, pole beans,  zucchini, and cucumbers as starter plants.  Unfortunately the cucumbers look pretty bad. I think last week’s cool temps were a little too chilly so I might have to get some more of those.  Lesson learned but I was just so excited to get planting!

I hope to also grow tomatoes, lots of different herbs, and peppers this year.   We have a pretty big space for a garden but it gets filled up fast.  I am thinking of experimenting with some vertical gardens this year.  We have a wood fence that gets great sunlight which I think would be the perfect spot.

Has anyone ever tried vertical gardening?   If yes, what are your tips?
