Exploring Detroit

September 28, 2016 by Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago we spent the weekend in Detroit.  We love living in Michigan and are working on exploring the whole state.  Detroit usually doesn’t come to mind as a city for a weekend vacay but I keep hearing about cool things that are happening in the city and wanted to see it for myself.  I think the city is on the upswing and we ended up having a great time.  I thought I would share a few pics from our weekend.

We started Saturday off with breakfast at Beyond Juicery + Eatery which is right next to Eastern Market.  I had a really good tumeric mango smoothie bowl with a sprinkle of cayenne which reminded me I should eat more smoothie bowls.

Eastern Market was what I was looking forward to the most.  It was huge, full of amazing produce, and beautiful flowers.

How cool is this vintage flower bouquet stand?!?

I was in mini succulent heaven!

You know he’s a keeper when he lugs around giant plants for me without a complaint.  The prices on plants were so good!  We came home with quite a few new plants including this crazy succulent (only $5!), a pepperoni plant, lots of mini cacti, and a ZZ plant that was given to us by a sweet woman named Bernice for our anniversary.  If you are ever at Eastern Market, make sure to stop by Bernice’s stand.

We had an early lunch/brunch at Selden Standard in Midtown.  Food not pictured due to extreme hunger but trust me it was really good.  I had a frittata with fresh veggies and a beet salad.   Also, they have delicious cashew milk if you’re into that kind of thing!

It was a rainy afternoon so we ended up going to the Detriot Institute of Art.  I didn’t realize how much amazing art is housed there…we wondered around for a good while and only scratched the surface.

The sun finally came out and we walked over to Corktown.  First stop was the Batch Brewing Company for a pre-dinner drink. Then dinner was at the Huron Room.  We had the patio all to ourselves.  The fish was good but the campfire potatoes were the star of the show.  I couldn’t put my finger on what made them so good so I had to ask, turns out they were cooked in duck fat.  Maybe it was better that I didn’t know…

After dinner we took a stroll down the riverwalk and cut through Campus Martius Park on our way back to the hotel.  They were having the cutest Oktoberfest.  Lots of food trucks and fall festivities, including this super cute zucchini car race for the kids.

On Sunday, we stopped by Belle Isle before heading home.   I love all conservatories and Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory was beautiful. It would be a wonderful place to hang out during the winter months when we are all craving that humidity.

I’m excited to see what is in Detroit’s future!
