Homemade Oprah Chai Tea Latte

September 8, 2014 by 11 Comments

Oprah really got it right with her Teavana  line.  I don’t go to Starbucks that often since I am not a coffee drinker but occasionally I find myself at there and I had to give the Oprah Chai Tea Latte a try.  It is a cinnamony, spicy, delicious chai tea blend that could be addictive if I let it.  However, I cannot stand forking out the cash for a drink that I gulp down in less than five minutes so I decided to try my hand at making it at home.  And I think I was pretty successful!  Plus there is no processed flavored syrup in sight.  I think the difference between regular chai and the Oprah chai tea is the intense cinnamon flavor.  I thought about just adding a bunch of regular cinnamon but then figured a cinnamon tea would probably taste much better.  I have a somewhat ridiculous stash of tea which luckily included the .  A tea described as a black tea with cinnamon, orange, and sweet cloves.  And don’t you just love the name??   But I think any cinnamon tea would work.   I mixed the cinnamon tea with regular and the result is shockingly similar to the Oprah chai.  I still want to do a blind taste test to see just how close they are.

Iced Oprah Chai Latte

I have been making a large jar of this mixture and then drinking it iced with a splash of coconut milk creamer or homemade almond milk.  I prefer it iced right now since it is still pretty warm and sunny outside but this winter I’m sure I’ll be drinking it warm with maybe some whipped cream on top.

Homemade Oprah Chai Tea Latte

1 cinnamon tea bag

1 chai tea bag

12 ounces water

2 ounces of creamer or milk of your choice

Sweetener to taste

Brew tea as usual.  I try to only let the tea bags steep for about 5 minutes or I find the tea can taste a little bitter.  If drinking warm, add creamer.  If drinking iced*, chill tea in refrigerator and mix in creamer in before drinking.  Top with a sprinkle of cinnamon.  Enjoy!

*You could also cold brew the tea.  Just place the tea bags in cool water and let sit overnight in the fridge.

Excited to try this! Thank you!

Do you have a way to make the base mixture in bulk so I can leave it refrigerated and just add mix and milk as I go?

Sure! I would just brew the tea like usual except maybe use 4-5 tea bags of each flavor in a large pitcher and then refrigerate. Then you can just heat it up or have on ice and add the milk when you’re ready to enjoy it.

I used about 14-16 ounces to 2 ounces of creamer. Sorry I didn’t clarify that in the post. I hope you like it!

This sounds great, thank you for sharing. I’m going to have to try it! It seems so simple compared to trying to make it from scratch. And I’d be interested to know the results of your blind taste test.

Hi. Do you have a favorite brand of chai? I’m enjoying Gypsy’s organic caramel chai right now. I happen to have this same cinnamon tea in the pantry so this recipe is on my list for tomorrow. Thanks so much.

Although this is a very cool idea. Not knocking at all just wanted to let you know that instead of buying the Oprah Chai Latte . You can actually buy the tea at Teavana and also at Starbucks. It’s a lot cheaper to buy the tea out right than to buy a drink everyday

Where can I find Harney & Sons tea? I bought the tea bags of the Oprah Chai tea, and I plan to make it tomorrow. Good idea to use Almond Milk, I was going to use Half & Half, but trying to get away from animal milk. Also, in Kim’s post, I will be looking for Gypsy’s Caramel Chai. That sounds yummy. I am new to tea, and have been buying the Oprah Chai Latte at Starbucks, but I saw the tea bags and decided to buy those. Can Kim tell me where to find Gypsys’s tea?
