DIY Dog Toy

December 15, 2016 by Leave a Comment

We are dealing with some super cold temperatures in Michigan right now.   Our dogs love playing in the snow but when the temps are this frigid outside, play time is definitely limited.

To help burn off some doggie boredom, I thought we could try some DIY dog toys.  This one I’m sharing today took just minutes to set up and it uses things you probably already have around your home…assuming you hoard cardboard tubes like I do (you never know when you might need them for a craft!).  Once you have your tubes, place them in some sort of container  (I think a square or rectangle shape would work best) and then drop in treats or kibble.   Our dog, Dexter, really isn’t motivated by treats so he sniffed around a bit but wasn’t really into it (tennis balls are more his thing) but Rosie is treat obsessed and loves it.

*It might help to put the container on a towel or rug too so it doesn’t slide around so much.

Lavender Rose Almond Face Scrub

May 16, 2016 by 1 Comment

Hi!  I’m back from a short blog hiatus. Life got busy and unfortunately the blog got pushed to the back burner. But I’m glad to be back!  So I actually have been busy in the kitchen lately but not with what you might think.  I’ve delved deep into the homemade beauty product world.  If you haven’t experimented with DIY beauty products, you’re missing out.  I’ve been having so much fun concocting different scrubs, lotions, and oils.  One of my favorite discoveries is the face scrub I’m sharing today.

Almond Face Scrub-10 - Copy

I have always been a beauty and skincare product junkie.   Before I figured out I wanted to be a dietitian, I actually went through training to be an esthetician.  Fast forward to today and I still love learning about different skincare products and how to best care for our skin.  I have found that my skin is much different that it was when I was in my 20’s.  It is so much drier and prone to breakouts now (ugh, adult acne is real and it is the worst).  I recently started paying more attention to the ingredients of my skincare.  I have found that anything with a high alcohol content or synthetic fragrance is really irritating to my skin.  The good news is ever since I have started with more natural and homemade skincare, I haven’t had as many issues.

For this scrub I took inspiration from a DIY recipe for Lush’s Angels on Bare Skin from the blog Lovely Greens.  I modified it a bit to what I had on hand and I would encourage you to do the same.  I experimented with using clay but it was a bit drying for every day use.  If you have oily skin, check out the original recipe on Lovely Greens.  I decided to substitute the clay for oats and am really happy with how it turned out.  The one new to me ingredient was vegetable glycerin.  I found it at my local health food store but it is also available on Amazon.  However I think you could substitute almond or olive oil and be just fine.

My favorite part of this recipe is that I finally found a good use for the almond pulp that is leftover from making homemade almond milk.   Store bought almond meal would work just as well.

One downside of DIY beauty products is the shelf life.  Since they contain real food and no preservatives they don’t last long. Keeping them in the fridge definitely extends the shelf life but I like to keep everything in the bathroom otherwise I’ll forget about it.   I recommend making smaller batches, using it frequently and sharing it with your family and friends.

Lavender Rose Almond Face Scrub

1/4 cup almond meal

1/4 cup rolled oats, coarsely ground

1 tablespoon vegetable glycerin

1 tablespoon rose water

5 drops lavender essential oil

5 drops rose essential oil

dried lavender buds (optional)

Pulse rolled oats in a food processor or blender until coarsely ground.  Mix all ingredients together and store in an airtight container.  Will keep for about 2 weeks unrefrigerated.  To use, take a teaspoon of scrub and mix it in your hands with a bit of water.  Apply to face and rub gently. Rinse clean with water.  Bonus: you could also use this as a gentle body scrub!

Check out my for more ideas and inspiration.

DIY Coffee Body Scrub

December 11, 2014 by 2 Comments

coffee scrub

We had to do a massive pantry clean out last weekend due to a critter invasion.  During the cleanout, I found quite a few bags of random coffee grounds.  Since we don’t use a coffee maker very often and  I can’t stand throwing things away I decided to make a body scrub out of the grounds.  I have heard the claims about coffee scrubs reducing cellulite due to the caffeine content however I just don’t buy it.  But I do think the grounds make a great exfoliator and smelling coffee during a morning shower might be a nice way to start the day.
