It’s no secret that we love Costco. One just opened near us last fall and since then we have been loving it. For one it is conveniently located near our house and two because it is just a fun place to go. You never know what the newest display is going to be and as long as you don’t go midday on the weekend it isn’t crazy crowded. (Otherwise beware of the sample monsters! They will knock you over just for a mini cup of mac n cheese.)
Since there are just two of us, I sometimes get questions about what we buy there since a lot of the items are supersized. I thought I would share what we bought this weekend which was a typical Costco grocery run.
1. Artichoke hearts – great on salads, pizzas, pasta dishes
2. Avocados – I usually set two on the counter and the rest in the fridge. Then I’ll take one out as I use a ripe one.
3. Pineapple
4. Veggie soup – Derek wanted this to keep at work for lunch emergencies.
5. Bell peppers
6. Almond butter
7. Kerry Gold Butter
8. Hearts of palm – also good in salads
9. Garbanzo beans
10. Cucumbers
11. Canned salmon and smoked salmon – attempts to try to eat more fish!
12. Dried dates
13. Frozen berries
14. Bananas
We also like to get dog food, frozen Ezekiel bread, dish soap, black beans, wine, quinoa, chia and hemp seeds, and all the kinds of cheese at Costco. We are still waiting for our Costco to get aged Gouda – I’ve only put it in the suggestion box about 20 times.
Although, I wouldn’t go so far as to say that we have saved a ton of money since joining. Costco also is a mastermind at making impulse buys seem so reasonable. Of course, we need a large 10 person floating raft and a new hand held vacuum. Thanks Costco! But I do think it is an economical place to buy groceries and of course gas is always cheaper too.
It is hard to resist all the delicious tempting baked goods and chocolate covered goodies but I find it is best to just avoid those aisles. At this Costco trip, the receipt checker actually told us we won for the healthiest cart so far that day. I was so proud (RD nerd alert)!
What are your favorite Costco finds?
